The Priesthood of Melchizedek and Tithing

Written: 8/7/2021

Much confusion lies with understanding tithing. Most of us know we should tithe but lack of understanding of the truth of the order of Melchizedek has to be reestablished. Before we can accept a tithe we feel we should be open and share what we follow as truth and therefore as a doctrine of the Kingdom of God.

We assume that God, when talking to Adam, established the tithe as a celebration of faith towards God as our provision…and our freedom from the spirit of mammon. Another way of saying it is tithing benefits the giver as a celebration of provision and our freedom from mammon. It is a demonstration of our trust in God to provide. The first tithe offered was demonstrated by Cain and Abel even though it was first recorded as a tithe later.

We must go to the scriptures in Genesis and Hebrews where tithing is mentioned.

In Genesis, Abraham has answered God’s call to leave his natural way of living to go to a land that God would show him. This is a type and shadow of how we also are called to leave our natural way of life to be established in another land.  (His Kingdom, His City)

Abraham is on this journey and He and Lot have already parted ways because of lack of grazing. Lot locates to Sodom (maybe Gomorrah) and is captured along with his family. Abraham takes his men and defeats those who’ve kidnapped Lot and his family and takes booty from the enemy.

This is the first time we are faced with the fact that there are Sons of God (Priests)  on the earth representing the order of God called Melchizedek. The implication is strong that tithing is not extraordinary.  Abraham gave 10% as a matter of course. It  had been established from the beginning as a direction from God followed by Sons of God.

We’re told here that this order of Melchizedek has no beginning and no end which only the definition of God fits. Melchizedek means Prince of Salem which means Prince of Peace. This is the title of our Lord, Christ, Jesus. Salem means peace. Before Jerusalem was called Jerusalem in antiquity it was called Har (Jar) Shalom which later was called Jerusalem. In Hebrews it is clarified that the city God was leading Abraham to was not of the earth. The New Jerusalem is spiritual or of the divine realm (the heavens) and represents God’s government or the Kingdom of God. In many scriptures of Zion (God’s family) and Jerusalem (His established order, His Government) go hand in hand.

Also, in  Hebrews the puzzle becomes more clear when the author establishes Jesus is the High Priest after the order of Melchizedek indicating the reason for the description in Genesis. Melchizedek has never ceased to be the order but the Levitical priesthood was established until mankind could be born of the Spirit through Christ, Jesus. He has no beginning and no end.

The priest (man, son of God) is the authorized representative standing as the one receiving the tithe for the Lord. The body of Christ is the action of Christ (the head) receiving the tithe.

The tithe establishes the son giving what already belongs to the Lord back to Him. The priest showed up to receive the tithes, it seems, according to the record. The Lord shows up in our hearts to receive what is His and we follow through by giving into the hands of His authorized representative. (Priest).

Peter further speaks to the fact that we are kings and priests. We are that in that we are the body in obedience to the head. This is established through scriptures to establish the order of the Kingdom as Christ establishes and authorizes that order.

When someone tithes to a “priest” (man established in God’s order they are recognizing they are giving the tithe to the Lord and they have no say in where it goes or how it is used. They trust the priest to use it as the Holy Spirit directs. It is the Lord’s. That priest should obviously be mature in their established positioning of the Lord (only say and do what the Lord instructs to say and do).

When being led to tithe to a particular person (priest of the Lord) the Father could be establishing a father/ (go-between representative) son relationship so the mature son can watch over their soul with the love of a father to help equip them to become mature.

The tithe is given in celebration of being established as a Son of God in God’s  Kingdom order. How blessed we are to celebrate our Father’s provision of all we need for life and Godliness through tithing. It speaks to the enemy’s of God that they have no power to control (usually through fear of letting go of earthly treasures) them through money (Spirit of mammon).

Note:  There is also a short excerpt where Jacob tell God he will give 10% to Him if He will bless Him. This simply indicates the knowledge of the order of the priesthood of Melchizedek existed along with a 10% tithe.
